Writing Using A System

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

If you want to write but you do not know how or where to begin you need a system.  Otherwise you might get easily bogged down which leads to procrastination, anxiety and misery.  Under those circumstances it is hard to get motivated and giving up seems much easier to do.

If you have started to write but have become overwhelmed by the process and  losted your steam there is a way for you to get back on track and actually get your writing completed.  Exact Steps to start and stay on track.

Without a system you will find yourself  starting and then stopping half way through promising to get back to writing later…which never comes.

Without the help of a writing coach new writers seem to go around in circles saying they want to write but never accomplishing even the simplest writing goals.

Do Not let that be you.  What you can share is important so stop running around that bush and for heaven’s sake stop saying you want to write if you can’t get out of the starting gate.  Get help NOW!!!  Go Immediately to get the help you need.

Writing Criticism-How To Handle It

Monday, February 15th, 2010

When you first start to write, you might be nervous about what other people will say about what you have written.  After all we never liked to get our papers back in school for fear that we might not get a good grade or that others in our class might see what grade we got and that has carried over into every area of our lives.

Being criticized is just a way of life.  It happens every where.  From how we dress to how we write to how we do a job and I could go on and on about the places it pops up.  Some comments are constructive but most are not.

However, you just have to muster up enough courage to begin to write down your stories and ideas. The world needs new ideas and problem solving solutions.  Who knows when what you have to say might be just the answer for many many others.

Inside of all of us is a deeply ingrained fear that the bigger we get, the more popular or noticed we are the more we will become a target for criticism and the world throwing out “pot shots” about us whether they are true or not.

The news is full of comments about what others are doing.  Never mind that they failed to get the facts or tell the truth.  The more outrageous the news the more the papers or magazines will sell.  Look at the paparazzi storms around people.  No wonder we do not want that to be a part of our lives.

Again, you just have to gather up the courage and begin to write.  Some will like your work, some will not and SO WHAT?  They did not have your experience, did not feel what you did and there will be enough that will like what you have done to keep you wanting to write more.

Take the points out of the writing criticism that will help you improve your writing and ignore the rest. If it helps great, if it does not help it is just someone who is jealous that they are not writing too.  Their resentment and anger is about them not about you.  Be good at sorting what is really applies to you. There are many who want the credit without doing any of the work.

Be glad you are willing to write and put your work out and keep doing that.

You Have Got To Get Off Your Duff And Start Writing

Monday, February 1st, 2010

You have been saying for a long time that you want to write.  Get going!!!  If you are on overwhelm there are a gazillion resources that I have provided for you. If you are not using any of them shame on you.

You either are going to write or you are not.  If you do not follow through stop talking about it.  You are just frustrating yourself and everyone else around you.  When you do not follow through on your dream you are also  sabotaging yourself with other things so stop trying to sink your creative ship.

If you have even 5 minutes you can begin and even sell your work.  Use the right side of your brain and just start jotting down ideas like you are doodling.

If you are trying to put an idea down and explain it right away your left brain is getting in the way and that is why you are experiencing writing being hard.

Writer’s block, feeling stuck about what you want to say and just not doing it are just barriers you must break free from.  I have given you lots of ways to do that so NO EXCUSES.  I want to see your written work out in the world this year. This is the year  for you to start. Get going, don’t look back, some will like what you write-some won’t-so what?

Another Book Off To The Publisher

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

When you are writing online your format is different than when you are having a book published off line whether that is self publishing or having a publisher doing that for you.

Most people use Microsoft Word to write documents and the default page size is the 8 1/2 X 11.  If you also want to be published, decide which size you are going to have as a finished book and set your page size accordingly before you begin.  If you do this when you start you will not have to go back and transfer your information to a smaller size later if you decide you want to have a published copy of your information. This way you can use the content on or offline and do that more easily.

It is exciting to see your writing come to a finished product you can hold in your hand.  Something that for many is a long process.  It is actually quite easy with the tools we have available to us today so I want to encourage you to press toward that goal and break through any blocks you might encounter.  Even if you only have 1 copy on your shelf, it is a very gratifying experience to hold that book in your hand.

Get Your Holidays Writing Ready

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

In your family, you have a collection of stories about your history and about the things that were important to you through the years.  This is a great time to begin to collect those stories as you are spending time together during the holiday season.  Gather, edit and put into a collection of your family experiences.

Then you can give your story collection to the different members of your family as gifts.  Each person has a different opinion about the events that happened so be sure to add each perspective. That will give your stories depth and add to the story line.  Have fun, enjoy your events and make lots of memories. It is easy to do when you are recording what is happening as it happens.

Seeing Your Writing From Fresh Eyes

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

In order to be effective as a writer, it is important occasionally to have new people review your work and give you input with fresh eyes. Are you able to communicate effectively to your reader the topic or information you are writing about? Having someone else review your work is called editing.

One of the resources I recommend is an ebook by Audrey Owen who is someone who has been an editor for a number of years. With her system of editing your writing she can show you how to edit your own work, give you common mistakes that writers make and how to correct them and how to prepare your work to submit to a publisher if you choose to do that. This resource is absolutely invaluable to you to help you see your work with fresh eyes so you can get your topic or information presented clearly to your future reader. Use her knowledge to accelerate your writing ability.

I’ll Start Writing When I Get Around To It

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Years ago we used to have coin shaped wooden pieces that had tuit written on one side.  They were for those people who always said I’ll do ___ when I get around to it. Are you saying that to yourself about any thing you are wanting to do but just have not worked into your schedule yet?

Consider that we always make time for those things we really want to do so the question now becomes do you want to write or are you just saying that is what you want to do for whatever reason you are proclaiming you want to write?  If it is writers block you are dealing with you can get help with that by putting your name and email address at the top of the page.

If you are just blowing smoke as they often say about words spoken that one never intends to follow through with now or ever but they sound good at the time, it is time to change your position and do it or stop talking about it.

How Stories Can Present Opportunities

Friday, May 8th, 2009

There are many types of stories. Not all start out with once upon a time.   A  few examples are adversity and how you overcame the obstacles.  Stories about how to make the best choice, stories about life and your approach to what you are experiencing.  There are many ways to transfer information.  Think about how a story might be helpful for you to give others information that they can then use in their lives.

You get better over time and with practice so find every opportunity to practice.  It will be quickly apparent that you are making progress one way or another.  No one can crank start you to share your story so  it will have to be your responsibility to take action.  That might mean you have to look at your internal drive to share your story and you will need to look at your list of excuses about why you are not moving forward if you say you want to write and are not doing it. (You know what your favorites are.  No money, no time, too busy)  We all find the time and the money to do exactly what we choose to do and/or want to do.  Avoid the big disconnects, saying one thing and doing something else.

Once you gain your self knowledge about what is important to you in your life and what you want to share, you can fine tune the point you want to share with the story you tell.  More people can then connect with you.  An extra benefit is that you will have amazing satisfaction that you were able to complete the process and finish your story, then share it.

So telling your story presents the opportunity to tell your story and also to determine where you are and how you can use that knowledge to move forward and tell your story at the same time. It is a look inside you and then how you share that to the outside world.

Writing About Your Approach To A Topic

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Everyone has a different way to write based on personal experience and topic preference.  That is why you see so many subjects that have books written about them from a variety of authors.  It is important to be true to your writing skills and cover the topic from your experience and expertise.  Your reader that can connect with you might only be able to hear or understand your approach to the topic.  The value you can contribute has the potential to be huge so be sure you allow yourself to write and get your work out into the world.

If you are finding that you are getting stopped, you might be experiencing writers block.  You can get help so you can break through and find the confidence to move forward.
