On the Internet the audience can move away from your words with a click of the button so you need to be focused and on target. You can’t take time for a slow buildup or meandering discussion. If you (the writer) do not seem to be delivering the goods then the reader will simply move on. This does not mean you need to cater to the lowest denominator but it does mean that you need to know your audience as well as how to respond to that audience’s needs and desires.

Another important point is that many Internet readers scan documents quickly before committing themselves to reading. It is important to write clearly and concisely as well as use punchy headlines and subheadings as well as catchy introductions and conclusions as these are key points for scanning.

Many words do not sound like they are written. If you put the phonetic spelling as well as the word it will help your reader follow your story line. Ex: Challis (shall lee) Plisse (pla say) are 2 types of Fabrics. Someone who sews would probably know how to say the word, but not always. Genre (john rah, what the different types of writing are called) is also one of those words.

When I was in high school my mom worked part time at a fabric store. They had a huge sale going on that was going to be over at the close of business that day. About five minutes before the store closed a lady came rushing in the door asking for the sudden buckle. Mom thought a few seconds and realized the lady was looking for a fabric called suddan boucle (boo clay). She was able to show the lady the fabric, help her pick out what she wanted and cut it off the bolt so the customer could have the sale price.

Had she not been able to convert the words the lady was speaking it would not have turned out well for the customer. So do what you can to help your reader follow your story.

Do you wish you could have more creative writing ideas?

Would you love to be able to write more easily, more abundantly, more deeply?

The best way of being able to do this is by using a creative writing journal.

A creative writing journal is simply a portable notebook or sketchbook you keep with you wherever you go, and jot down your creative writing ideas in when they come to you.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it.

But how, and why, does this help your creative writing?

What makes a creative writer a creative writer? It’s not a trick question.

The answer is: they have creative ideas, they write them down, then they expand upon them so they have poems, stories, scripts and so on.

That’s really all there is to it.

But these three parts in sequence are essential:

1. Having ideas.

2. Capturing ideas.

3. Developing ideas into larger pieces of writing.

If a creative writer doesn’t have any ideas, their writing doesn’t even get started.

Where we often fear we don’t have enough ideas, the truth is that we do have the ideas, we just don’t capture them, then they pass by, forever gone and forgotten.

How often have you had a flash of inspiration, then a few hours, or even a few days later, remembered that you had a good idea, but can’t actually remember what it was?

If a creative writer doesn’t capture their ideas, they’re not a writer, they’re only a thinker!

By using a creative writing journal you capture these ideas, then you can go on to develop them.

All you need to do to capture your ideas is write them down. Use enough detail and description to try to store the essence of the idea, what made it exciting for you the moment it occurred.

The aim is for you to be able to return to your creative writing journal and the idea leaps out at you and gives you the same feeling as it did when it first came to you.

The more practiced you get at doing this, the fewer words you’ll need to jot down in your writing journal to capture this essence.

The final part of being a creative writer is developing your ideas.

If you don’t have any ideas, or you have very few ideas, it’s very difficult to expand them into rewarding pieces of writing.

But because you now have a creative writing journal bursting at the seams with ideas, this whole process is made so much easier for you.

The most effective way to use your creative writing journal here is to just grab the first idea that inspires you in your journal. Go with that creative energy and start writing out from that idea and expanding it how you see fit.

This is how using a creative writing journal can help your creative writing in its 3 essential stages –

1. Having ideas

2. Capturing ideas

3. Developing ideas.

Invest in a creative writing journal for yourself today, start using it and you’ll find in just a few weeks, the difference it make to your creative writing is profound.

Even the most experienced and seasoned creative writer can benefit from creative writing exercises and prompts.

The key to continuing to grow and develop as a creative writer is to keep experimenting, trying new techniques, ideas and exercises to challenge yourself.

Using a variety of different approaches and starting points in your creative writing will help you to explore your potential as a writer and keep pushing the boundaries.

But although creative writing exercises and prompts are a great tool to use, they assume one thing.

They assume that you are willing and able to write.

Give a writer a creative writing exercise or prompt and they won’t necessarily come up with some interesting creative writing.

In fact many times, however ingenious, stimulating and brilliant the exercise is, the writer won’t produce a single word, let alone a wonderful piece of writing.

So why is this? What’s missing?

There are a number of different factors that stop us from writing, however gifted and talented we are.

Perversely, often the more naturally capable we are of writing creatively, the more we struggle to write.

Here are some of the crucial elements a creative writing exercise or prompt on its own WON’T give you, and how to get it:

1. The confidence to write creatively. Talent and ability amount to very little if you simply lack confidence in your writing.

Build your confidence by starting small and writing little and often. A few paragraphs of a story, a short poem, or a blog entry every day will help you get into the habit of writing consistently. Then you can just increase the amount and frequency as your confidence builds.

2. The “set up” to write creatively. If you don’t have somewhere you can go and start writing within a couple of minutes, you’ll lose motivation and inspiration.

Have a designated place for you to write. If you don’t have your own room or study, at least have a desk or chair where you can have your creative writing equipment to hand and ready for you to start writing at a moment’s notice.

3. The permission to write creatively. Even if you think on the surface you’re willing to write, often on a deeper level, you’re not allowing yourself to. Not giving yourself permission to create is an often overlooked creative block.
Write out for yourself some positive affirmations, such as “I deserve to be able to create”, “I have as much right to create as anyone”, “The world needs me to be creative” and simply “I give myself permission to be creative”. Practice reading them out loud regularly.

4. The time to write creatively. Many of us claim we don’t have time to spend on our creative writing. The truth is, we don’t make it enough of a priority.

Start by giving yourself just 10 minutes at the same time each day to spend writing. Get up a little earlier, go to bed a little later, fit it in wherever you can. By practicing this routine, you’ll find it soon becomes easier to extend it to a larger chunk of time each day, without impacting the time demands of the rest of your life.

5. The motivation to write creatively. Even if you have everything else in place, if you’re not motivated to write, you just won’t write.

Keep your motivation high by reminding yourself why you write creatively. What are the top 5 benefits? What are the 10 things you love about being able to write creatively? What are your ambitions as a creative writer? Write these out and pin them up somewhere prominent to keep you motivated.

Spend a little time and effort on each of these 5 key areas and you’ll soon find there’s no limit to how much you can write.

Then, using those creative exercises and prompts will add the extra dimension you need to explore your creative writing even more.

Ebooks are one of the ways you can add into your strategy to share your work with others. Electronic publishing is easy to do and your reader can just download the file so they have instant access to your work. (After they pay, of course) In addition you can self publish a small quantity of books that you can have available for the person who just wants to see the book on their shelf after they have read it.

Many authors are starting with this form of connecting to their reader base and occasionally the brick and mortar publishers contact the person who has been successful with their online sales to do a traditional publishing contract.

If you don’t add ebooks to your sharing mix, you’ll miss out on a huge credibility builder and be leaving a whole lot of money on the table! Get those fingers typing with your content, save them in a pdf file and offer them to those who want to buy your work. The world is waiting to read what you have to say, so big breath and go for it! You can do it!!

Have you ever been to a food buffet? Usually the choices are amazing if you go to a good location. It can be challenging to decide which choice of foods you want.

Well, creative writing is a very similar situation. There are so many choices of topics that can be written about it can be challenging to know where to begin and which topic will create the desired result.

It is also challenging when going to a buffet not to overeat. Everything looks good and tastes good and it is not until after you leave the buffet that you often discover you over ate. Then it takes a bit of time to digest all of the food you consumed.

Again, very similar to creative writing. You want to add a lot of extra data to really convince the reader that you know what you are talking about as you are writing and in doing so can over deliver but not in a good way. You reader can go away from your material feeling much like they do when they over eat the food at the buffet.

After you have written your material, set it aside a short period of time and then come back and re read your information. If you begin to feel like it’s too much information, you can start to edit your work so you are giving the reader high quality content and in just the right amount for them to grasp the ideas you are sharing with them.

If you need help with editing your work before you publish it or submit it to a publisher for consideration here is a resource that is really helpful:
