When you think about a topic that you usually write about, try to present it from a different angle so you can give it a fresh approach. You will discover new things about the topic that you have missed out on because of being familiar with your old way of communicating about the subject. It can be fun and exciting to see the new information pop in and may give you as well as your reader a new way of thinking about the topic.

What you want to avoid is people saying to you”Oh, I already know about that” when you are presenting new information to them. This often happens because you continue to approach the topic in the same way and when you have a new insight, they pop into resisting your new information because they think you are going to repeat your old information just by your approach to sharing with them in your old way.

Make them curious about what you have discovered by using a new method of sharing with them. There are so many new ways to do that today with the technology that is available. If you usually share with technology, how about writing the information down and sharing by card or letter? I know you will think of something that is different from your usual way of doing things. You know yourself best when it comes to the ways you have shared in the past.

So, change it up and deliver your content in a new way and have fun doing it while you are exploring new choices. If we get bored, so will our readers and they will appreciate your new approaches. Look around you, fresh ideas that will make your reader look at your content with fresh eyes, are everywhere.

A great number of us have creative writing talents far greater than we realise.

But despite this, most of us simply aren’t writing creatively anywhere near as well, as much, or as often as we could be.

Why is this? Surely if we truly want to write creatively it’ll just naturally flow?

There are many reasons why we don’t reach our potential. Here are 3 of the most common, and some top tips on how to overcome them:

1. You haven’t found your best writing format. Everyone has their favourite methods of writing, the ones in which we’re comfortable and competent in. Maybe yours is short stories, or poems, or novels.

But often we continue to write in this format because we feel it’s all we know how to do, it just comes automatically. Though we feel we’ve got much more potential to be discovered, we can’t seem to unlock it through this form of writing we’re used to.

Top Tips to try: Try different types of writing, those you’d never even consider, those you’ve never tried before, those you haven’t even discovered yet. You might find a new form that lets you unleash that creative potential like never before.

At the very least, you’ll return to your main writing medium a richer, more experienced creative writer.

2. You don’t write often enough. What not-so-secret method helps a creative writer improve more than anything else? Writing!

If you’re only writing once in a while and have serious ambitions to develop your creative writing potential, you’ll simply have to write more widely, more deeply and more often. There’s no avoiding it!

Top Tips to try: Regularity is the key. Commit to writing for a small period of time every day for 14 days. You could start with just 10 minutes, but make sure you stick to it every day.

Write a few paragraphs on a new piece of work each day or just whatever’s in your thoughts at the time. The crucial part is to write consistently every day, then you can build up the amount gradually.

3. You don’t believe in your creative ability. On the surface you appear to be writing at a good standard and at a healthy steady rate of output.

But inside you long to burst out of the familiar straightjacket and let your creative writing talent run wild. What stops you? On a deep level you simply don’t believe you’ve got it in you.

Top Tips to try: Think about what you truly believe about your creative writing ability. Write down all your beliefs around your creative writing ability. If you find you actually don’t believe you’re capable of taking your writing to a new level, you’ll never progress.

Start to adopt the beliefs that are consistent with someone who reaches a little closer to their creative potential every day. Think about what someone who’s confident and creative believes about themselves and take on those beliefs yourself.

These are just 3 of the most common reasons why we don’t reach our potential for writing creatively.

Pick one that you identify with and try the tips suggested to help you become a better creative writer TODAY.

Do you wish you could have more creative writing ideas?

Would you love to be able to write more easily, more abundantly, more deeply?

The best way of being able to do this is by using a creative writing journal.

A creative writing journal is simply a portable notebook or sketchbook you keep with you wherever you go, and jot down your creative writing ideas in when they come to you.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it.

But how, and why, does this help your creative writing?

What makes a creative writer a creative writer? It’s not a trick question.

The answer is: they have creative ideas, they write them down, then they expand upon them so they have poems, stories, scripts and so on.

That’s really all there is to it.

But these three parts in sequence are essential:

1. Having ideas.

2. Capturing ideas.

3. Developing ideas into larger pieces of writing.

If a creative writer doesn’t have any ideas, their writing doesn’t even get started.

Where we often fear we don’t have enough ideas, the truth is that we do have the ideas, we just don’t capture them, then they pass by, forever gone and forgotten.

How often have you had a flash of inspiration, then a few hours, or even a few days later, remembered that you had a good idea, but can’t actually remember what it was?

If a creative writer doesn’t capture their ideas, they’re not a writer, they’re only a thinker!

By using a creative writing journal you capture these ideas, then you can go on to develop them.

All you need to do to capture your ideas is write them down. Use enough detail and description to try to store the essence of the idea, what made it exciting for you the moment it occurred.

The aim is for you to be able to return to your creative writing journal and the idea leaps out at you and gives you the same feeling as it did when it first came to you.

The more practiced you get at doing this, the fewer words you’ll need to jot down in your writing journal to capture this essence.

The final part of being a creative writer is developing your ideas.

If you don’t have any ideas, or you have very few ideas, it’s very difficult to expand them into rewarding pieces of writing.

But because you now have a creative writing journal bursting at the seams with ideas, this whole process is made so much easier for you.

The most effective way to use your creative writing journal here is to just grab the first idea that inspires you in your journal. Go with that creative energy and start writing out from that idea and expanding it how you see fit.

This is how using a creative writing journal can help your creative writing in its 3 essential stages –

1. Having ideas

2. Capturing ideas

3. Developing ideas.

Invest in a creative writing journal for yourself today, start using it and you’ll find in just a few weeks, the difference it make to your creative writing is profound.

You have been saying for a long time that you want to write. Get going!!! If you are on overwhelm there are a gazillion resources that I have provided for you. If you are not using any of them shame on you.

You either are going to write or you are not. If you do not follow through stop talking about it. You are just frustrating yourself and everyone else around you. When you do not follow through on your dream you are also sabotaging yourself with other things so stop trying to sink your creative ship.

If you have even 5 minutes you can begin and even sell your work. Use the right side of your brain and just start jotting down ideas like you are doodling.

If you are trying to put an idea down and explain it right away your left brain is getting in the way and that is why you are experiencing writing being hard.

Writer’s block, feeling stuck about what you want to say and just not doing it are just barriers you must break free from. I have given you lots of ways to do that so NO EXCUSES. I want to see your written work out in the world this year. This is the year for you to start. Get going, don’t look back, some will like what you write-some won’t-so what?

In order to be effective as a writer, it is important occasionally to have new people review your work and give you input with fresh eyes. Are you able to communicate effectively to your reader the topic or information you are writing about? Having someone else review your work is called editing.

One of the resources I recommend is an ebook by Audrey Owen who is someone who has been an editor for a number of years. With her system of editing your writing she can show you how to edit your own work, give you common mistakes that writers make and how to correct them and how to prepare your work to submit to a publisher if you choose to do that. This resource is absolutely invaluable to you to help you see your work with fresh eyes so you can get your topic or information presented clearly to your future reader. Use her knowledge to accelerate your writing ability.

When you have read a great story have you noticed that everything comes together at the end? The plot makes sense, the story is pulled together and all of the parts added to the end result.

Taking all of the parts I have encouraged you to put into your file and save for story material, why not see if you can create a story going from the end back toward the beginning. Let me explain how you might do that.

Select the ending you want. Next, move to thinking about what might have been going on right before the result you wrote down as your ending for your story. Choose from your story idea stash or create a new idea and have that be in place as the part of the story that led to your ending. Next, move back one step further. What might have been going on in this part of your story to flow to the last two parts you selected.

Let me put this in another way. Pretend you needed a birthday cake for a special person and you were not going to stop by the store and buy one. The last thing you might put on the cake would be candles. Moving back, the cake would need icing. Moving back one more step, the cake would need to be put on a plate. Moving back one more step, the cake would be taken out of the baking pans. Moving back one more step, the cake would be cooling after coming out of the oven. You can follow the process all the way back to when you decided to make the cake. When you have completed this exercise, you can read through the steps, from beginning to end this time, and see if the steps are in order and exactly what was needed at that time to reach the outcome you were headed for, in this case, a birthday cake with candles on it.

Do you see how you could use the process in reverse in your writing? It is a fabulous way to create a story and be sure you have put in all of the details for your reader to follow so the story comes together. It is also a way to use the creative part of your brain to set up the sequence and make sense of the movement and flow of the material you are writing.

When moving backwards you will immediately be aware that there is something missing if you have left out one of the steps. When you are moving forward with your writing it is more difficult to catch that a detail that is very important might have been overlooked.

Another thing that is great about writing this way is that your inner critic will have quite a challenge trying to find something to point out to you about what you are doing. It is so refreshing to quiet that inner critic, enjoy the process and create a story that you can use. Repeat the process as often as you like by making this a tool for you to use as needed.

I personally find it is so much fun to write in this way it often is my choice when asked to write for someone else or for a publisher. I can go about it knowing that the potential to have a good article or story is very high. That allows me to relax and write. I find I can complete my story more quickly and I feel more confident when I present the story. All of these things can change your sense of accomplishment and satisfaction about how to write and I find every use of this tool to be of value. See what you think after you try this writing method and approach.

Writing is about choices in the words we use or leave out as the story or event unfolds. You can choose your ideas and what combination of words you will persue with your written communication. That is what makes it so much fun.

Words are descriptive in the way they convey the information so the more descriptions, the better and more interesting the writing. To add spice to your words, you need to add feelings or emotional content with your words to get your reader involved with your story. Choose your words carefully so you don’t let them get in the way of the message you are telling by diverting the readers attention away from your topic.

If you have other opinions about your topic that do not directly relate to the outcome you want to achieve with what you are writing or provide good stimulation for your reader to consider the other points of view presented, you need to put them in another article or story. Then your reader does not wonder aimlessly through your writing and get confused with too many points of information about the topic that do not seem to add to their discovery or allow them to form an opinion from the information you presented. The moment the reader has to work at the words on the page is when the reader loses interest in what you are writing.

Write for yourself and not to impress others. You will discover that people connect with you and your consistency in the way you do things, talk about things or write about things. It adds value to them when you are believable. So what words do you frequently choose that make you believable? Are there any words you might want to choose to leave out of your verbal and written communication?
