The Twelve Steps To Becoming An Author

Writing, publishing, promoting, publicizing. First you need to start out by doing the right things and knowing what can contribute to or set back your success. Keep in mind that while there is always a creative element, publishing requires a specific set of steps. It’s important to know your business to be successful. Consider these ideas over the next few days I will be sharing with you and I hope they will help you on your journey from writer to successful author.

1. Are you waiting too long to market?

When it comes to marketing, some authors wait too long to get the word out there. If you’re sitting on top of your publication date wondering where to start with your marketing, you’re about six months behind the curve.

Book marketing is a series of promotional steps. A great campaign will consist not only of a focused marketing plan, but a plan that starts early enough to support the ramp up that a good book marketing campaign needs. And this isn’t just for the self-published market, any book that’s being released these days needs a minimum of a six-month ramp up.

This doesn’t mean that you are marketing during that time, but ideally you are getting ready for your launch by having a website designed, starting a newsletter, building your mailing list, building your media list, planning your events and letting prospective readers know what is coming.

Writing To Capture Your Reader’s Attention

On the Internet the audience can move away from your words with a click of the button so you need to be focused and on target. You can’t take time for a slow buildup or meandering discussion. If you (the writer) do not seem to be delivering the goods then the reader will simply move on. This does not mean you need to cater to the lowest denominator but it does mean that you need to know your audience as well as how to respond to that audience’s needs and desires.

Another important point is that many Internet readers scan documents quickly before committing themselves to reading. It is important to write clearly and concisely as well as use punchy headlines and subheadings as well as catchy introductions and conclusions as these are key points for scanning.

Reasons To Write

For my blog visitors, I hope all is well. As an author and publisher, I believe writers have an opportunity to preserve their thoughts, experiences, creativity and expertise in print, as well as other forms of media. We all have a story to tell for others to receive encouragement, inspiration, education, entertainment, and more.

Writing is a way the the author and the readers connect with each other over a message. If an article, ebook or book’s message is strong enough and is shared by many, it can create change.

For business people, it is a format that potential clients can take home with them, study, read, and learn from an expert. It can even be a way to prime a client before they embark on hiring you for your specialty.

If you are looking for a reason to write an article, ebook or book, those are really good reasons. However, if you need another reason; according to the November 30, 2009 IBISWorld Industry Report, the Book Publishing Industry is a $25.7 billion dollar industry.

There are thousands of new books released each year from small to large publishing houses. If you choose to write, you will have access to a part of that $25.7 billion dollars when you write, promote and sell your written work.

All very good reasons for you to think about what you might be able to share with prospective readers.

Writing Dreams Can Be Fulfilled

As each new Olympic record is broken, we are amazed at how humans can possibly reach higher achievements … faster trials … longer endurance.

All that is required to achieve success is desire and dedication. Just as the Olympic athletes strive to set new records, by diligently and joyously applying yourself, you will watch your dreams and aspirations to become a writer fulfilled in ways you thought unimaginable!

If you can dream it you can achieve it. Share with your readers your dreams and visions of impacting the world. All it takes is just to begin. Are you willing?

Be A Best Selling Author

Another Book Off To The Publisher

When you are writing online your format is different than when you are having a book published off line whether that is self publishing or having a publisher doing that for you.

Most people use Microsoft Word to write documents and the default page size is the 8 1/2 X 11. If you also want to be published, decide which size you are going to have as a finished book and set your page size accordingly before you begin. If you do this when you start you will not have to go back and transfer your information to a smaller size later if you decide you want to have a published copy of your information. This way you can use the content on or offline and do that more easily.

It is exciting to see your writing come to a finished product you can hold in your hand. Something that for many is a long process. It is actually quite easy with the tools we have available to us today so I want to encourage you to press toward that goal and break through any blocks you might encounter. Even if you only have 1 copy on your shelf, it is a very gratifying experience to hold that book in your hand.
